How to use MOBSS ?
How to place and to remove a MOBSS
The video (with subtitles in SPANISH, ENGLISH & GERMAN) explains what to consider when setting and removing a MOBSS.
BEFORE you use your MOBSS:
1. Check its condition. Does it look good? Does it show any bends? Any damage? Any corrosion? All this would speak against further use of this MOBSS.
2. Check that its cone can move freely, that the cone can be screwed on and off easily in the thread of the anchor screw and that the thread of the screw is clean. This is important to avoid any jamming.
3. Check that the cone already sits a little in the slot of the sleeve. It is especially important that the small bars are already in these slots.
BE AWARE: if you screw the cone too far into the sleeve, then you can’t get the MOBSS into the borehole. On the other hand, if the cone is not screwed on far enough, you have the problem that the bars may sit under the sleeve. In the worst case (only if you have already opened the MOBSS, e.g. to repair it) it is possible that the cone is screwed on so little that the bars are jamming the sleeve. In that case you believe that the MOBSS is tight when you screw it on, but it is not! However as long as you don’t repair the MOBSS yourself, it is already adjusted in such a way that the cone sits a little in these slots. In that way this cannot happen. Nevertheless, if you ever need to repair it, this is a very important fact to keep in mind!
4.Check the borehole: is it the right size (10mm)? Does it have dirt inside? Is it filled with an oily liquid?
BE AWARE: Wetness alone is less of a problem for the slip resistance of the MOBSS, but oil and greasy substances are of course more problematic.
TO SET the MOBSS
1. Push the mobile anchor into the borehole.
2. Tighten the knurled screw clockwise until the MOBSS feels reasonably tight. Finally, give it a quarter to half turn until the MOBSS cannot be tightened any further.
Now the MOBSS is secure and can be used.
BE AWARE: On a belay or if a MOBSS is repeatedly under load-stress (for example because you train to overcome a difficult climbing passage) and therefor there is repeatedly a load on the MOBSS), then the cone is pulled further and further into the sleeve and the screw of the MOBSS can become a little loose again. In that case it has to be tightened again. This is especially important at a belay. In this case you have to check the condition of the MOBSS regularly and tighten the MOBSS whenever necessary.
TO REMOVE the MOBSS
1. Turn the screw counterclockwise. If it is jammed push the MOBSS in first (see step 2) After that you should be able to turn the screw.
2. Push either with your thumb or with a blow of a karabiner (if the MOBSS has tightened very much, then it may sometimes not work with your thumb alone).
3. Remove the MOBSS by using the pull-out flap.
BE AWARE: If you use a karabiner, it is always important that you only hit on the metal parts of the anchor and not the plastic pull-out flap, as it can break off with a heavy punch and then you will have problems removing the MOBSS.
Removing a MOBBS that is difficult to remove
The video (with subtitles in SPANISH, ENGLISH & GERMAN) explains what to do when a MOBSS is difficult to remove.
At times it can be difficult to remove a MOBSS.
For example, if
- the MOBSS is deformed due to a heavy fall or
- the MOBSS has become distorted due to a heavy load,
- the borehole is not drilled or cleaned in a correct way
- the borehole is too narrow
NOTE for Route-Makers: If you use a drill that makes boreholes too small or too accurate in size (10mm) your MOBSS may be difficult or impossible to be placed or removed. For easy handling our experience has shown that a hole with a the r.o.c.k.d.o.g.s size of 10,2 mm is perfect to easily place and remove a MOBSS. We recommend to use our drill DRI.
- the borehole has some sand or earth in it
First of all you might find it difficult to open the screw anticlockwise.
In this case
- tap with a Karabiner or the handle of the MOZI against the head of the screw.
Explanation: After a heavy fall or a heavy weight the anchor has slightly been pulled out and as a result the cone is pulled deep into the sleeve and has blocked the screw. By pushing the MOBSS back into the borehole you push the cone out of the sleeve. That usually helps to unscrew the anchor.
If you still can’t get it out
- use the MOZI.
Its main function is to remove a stuck MOBSS from a borehole.
- you slide the forked head of the MOZI between the rock and the pull-out flap
- and lever out the MOBSS
Now it can be removed by hand.
