How to drill a MOBSS-borehole?

5 things to consider before drilling

  1. The hole should be placed in as much of a smooth, compact and crack-free area of the rock face as possible.
  2. Make sure it is not drilled too close to an edge of the rock so that the Mobss will not blow off the rock face during a fall.
  3. Also make sure that the hole is set in such a way that a carabiner, which is clipped into the MOBSS does not come to rest on a break-off edge.
  4. We recommend that you choose a spot where the hole is not easily clogged with dirt by rain and wind (not in water rills, sandy rock, too shallow rock).
  5. at the belay site, the borehole must always be placed more than chest height!

5 steps when drilling a MOBSS-borehole

The video (with subtitles in SPANISH, ENGLISH & GERMAN) shows you how to drill a hole for a MOBSS.

1. Drill a 10mm hole 65mm deep with a 3- or 4-bladed drill bit. The hole should be set at a 90 degree angle to the rock face. We recommend a three- or four-flute drill bit of 10mm, but one that will drill a 10.2mm hole (like the r.o.c.k.d.o.g.s DRI). This makes the MOBSS easier to handle when setting and removing it.

2. Brush the hole.

Use a brush to roughly remove the drilling dust from the hole. Do not use a metal brush, which can cause longitudinal grooves in the soft rock. We recommend r.o.c.k.d.o.g.s  BRU.

3. Blow out the hole.

By blowing out the hole you remove the fine drilling dust. We recommend r.o.c.k.d.o.g.s  BLO.

4. Mark the hole.

Mark the MOBSS hole in such a way that the mark can be seen from the previous hole. Use a marker about 1cm wide (We recommend r.o.c.k.d.o.g.s  POI) and place a 1-2cm dot of paint about 5-10cm from the MOBSS hole. you can also paint the outer rim of the borehole. Use always the same color for one route.

5. Test the newly drilled hole by placing a MOBSS and tightening it. Finally remove it again.
